The hot air balloon lifts off before sunrise. Below you, the Maasai Mara is still dark — a vast expanse of shadowed grassland broken by the silver thread of the Mara River. By the time the balloon reaches its cruising altitude of 300 metres, the first light is touching the horizon.
What follows is one hour of the most extraordinary wildlife viewing available anywhere on earth. You drift silently over elephant herds moving through the half-light. Lion prides still at their kills. Hippo pools catching the morning gold. The entire ecosystem laid out below you like a map, with no vehicle noise, no dust, no engine.
The flight ends with a champagne breakfast in the bush — a white tablecloth set on the plains, wherever the balloon happens to land. Bush breakfast is followed by a game drive back to camp.
