The Maasai Mara is Kenya's most celebrated wildlife reserve — 1,510 square kilometres of open savannah in the Great Rift Valley, sharing an unfenced border with Tanzania's Serengeti. The annual Great Migration, when 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle move north across the Mara River, is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth.
The Mara is not just about the Migration. Year-round, the reserve supports one of the densest concentrations of predators in Africa — lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena are encountered on almost every game drive. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe and zebra are ever-present.
The best time to visit depends on what you are looking for. The dry seasons (January–March and July–October) offer the clearest skies and easiest game viewing. The Migration river crossings peak between August and October. The green season (April–June) brings fewer visitors, lush landscapes and lower rates — and the predator action is extraordinary during calving season.
